Rob began club racing "P" class yachts at Paremata Boating Club (with brother Matt, and parents as support crew). He sailed Junior Cherubs, Lasers, 470 and later keelers. It enabled family holidays to Abel Tasman, Nelson, D'Urville Island and adventure trips, including a circumnavigation of the South Island and Stewart Island.
Recently Rob has run a voluntary rodent eradication programme on Pickersgill Island which has encouraged return of native bird life the the Island.
Rob pursued an interest in cycling, he has ridden the Round Taupo Cycle race five times.
